his mind and heart are till in Taichung…

This year in May, following Meng’s group, we traveled to Canada to visit a monk who had previously served at their Catholic school. During the journey, we heard many stories about him, stories of selfless dedication, obedience, and love.

The monk had served in Taiwan for 47 years and upon returning, found his homeland to be unfamiliar. In a letter, he expressed that his mind and heart are still in Taichung. So, we flew over, 10,000 kilometers in the sky and 600 kilometers on the ground.

The 80-year-old monk, Father Shi, had a charming smile like in the photos. Though his Chinese vocabulary was limited, he said, “Thank you for coming."

In the nursing home, there were many clergy members from around the world. Some of the priests who had been to Taiwan could still fluently speak Chinese. We brewed tea together, just like old friends chatting.

As anticipated from the beginning, another farewell is always more difficult than the initial meeting.
