Among all the traditional operatic forms prospering in Taiwan now, Taiwanese opera is the only one that originated in Taiwan, with roots found in the Lanyang Plains of Yilan in eastern Taiwan. It is a local theatrical form that evolved from the humming song that the farming folks of the Lanyang Plain used to sing during their leisure time over a century ago.
As time progresses, the Ming Hwa Yuan Arts & Cultural Group Theatre is facing a generational transition. This program will delve into the backstage and front-of-house of Ming Hwa Yuan, uncovering three stories of succession: the mother-daughter-like relationship between performers, the partnership of the costume management team, and the brotherly bond of the prop-making crew.
