What if listening could reshape the way we perceive the world?

Following sound collector Wu Tsan-Cheng through Taiwan’s coasts, harbors, cities, and forests, the film traces more than a decade of his work documenting the island’s soundscape. Through repeated journeys across Taiwan, he has gathered over 16,000 recordings, meticulously geotagging and uploading each one to the Taiwan Sound Map.

Beneath his ambisonic microphone, waves and airplanes, birdsong and traffic, rainstorms and public broadcasts converge to form the soundscape of a place. These layered sounds bear witness to the coexistence of people and their environments, reflecting everyday life and the changing rhythms of the times.

In contrast to sound ecologist Gordon Hempton’s pursuit of silence in One Square Inch of Silence, One Square Meter of Existence returns to the ordinary, reconsidering the soundscape we inhabit through everyday listening.
